Nino seemed to know where his train of thought had been going, putting a hand on his shoulder. "She'll be here, she just always runs late. You gotta stop beating yourself up. Marinette bounces back better than that."
"I hope you're right," Adrien said. It wouldn't solve the awkwardness between them, but he would at least feel a bit less guilty. Nino gave him a nudge on the shoulder and a reassuring smile before Alya distracted him; the girl often arrived quite a bit earlier than her best friend, since she was pretty eager to escape her full house.
Marinette herself didn't show up until everyone else had already made their way into the classroom. She was on time for once, if with only seconds before the bell rang, and she kept her head ducked low as she jumped up the steps to pass Adrien as quickly as possible on the way to her seat. The blond already had a sinking feeling, but he couldn't help flicking his eyes up to catch a glimpse up, hoping that maybe she was just preoccupied.
She didn't look good at all. Red-lined eyes, blotchy cheeks, and the way she met his gaze for only a split-second before jerking her face further away--it was obvious she'd been crying lately herself, but hadn't been able to cover it up as well as he had. Adrien looked back down at his desk guiltily before looking to Nino, silently pleading how he handled this. His friend seemed completely surprised, craning his neck toward Marinette before he jerked his head forward to give her privacy. When Adrien caught his eye, the other teenager shrugged helplessly, looking completely baffled. Nino had known Marinette for a much longer time, but he didn't seem to know what to do here either.
