Jan. 3rd, 2018 12:42 pm"WE'RE HERE!" Edea and Ringabel shouted as they pounded on the door to Tiz's modest farmhouse. It was Agnès who opened the door, though she was wincing.
"There's no need to shout, you two."
"No reason not to! We're excited to be here, and the next neighbor's a mile over," Edea countered, sweeping Agnès up in a hug. "It's so good to see you again! I'm surprised you got here before us." Agnès was the better planner, but she was...not so much the navigator.
"Oh, I've actually been here for over a week," Agnès said. "I must have arrived after Tiz sent his last letter."
"Over a week?" Ringabel questioned, his eyebrows rising in curiosity. "So then, does that mean everything's settled to your satisfaction? You're finally..."
"I am no longer Agnès Oblige," the brunette said, giving him a small but pleased smile. "Only Agnès, please."
Ringabel laughed, and this time he swept the young woman up in a hug, enveloping her in his arms and swinging her about. He knew that after a lifetime of duty, Agnès had been yearning for freedom to live her own life. But Luxendarc's peace had been so precarious with not just the loss of all the vestals except Agnès, but also the only tentative cessation of hostilities between Eternia and Orthodoxy. The attacks by the Kaiser Oblivion and the Glanz Empire had only worsened matters. As much as Agnès had wanted to retire, there had been certain matters she wanted to see settled before she relinquished her title as Pope. And now they were done. "Congratulations!" he said happily, giving her a kiss on the crown of her head.
"Thank you." She sank into his arms, relaxing until he started to slow in his swings. At that point she planted her feet more firmly, turning around to face him and getting up on her tiptoes to give him a kiss on the cheek. She turned and gave Edea one as well, then motioned them in. "Come on! It's too cold out here."
Edea laughed. "We came from Eternia, Agnès."
"And you wonder why I don't want to live there."
